Humble Beginnings
Spoon River Blacktop, LLC. started as a family business in 1984 in Astoria, IL as a husband and wife team, later adding their son as a third owner. The business moved to Lewistown in 1997 with the plant fully operational a year later. After the passing of Mike’s wife in 2010, he and Matthew have continued to run the business as a father and son. It is truly a family business.
Mike’s daughter, Ashley, runs the office while her husband is the plant manager and works on the grading crew. Matthew’s wife helps out in the office when she’s not in the classroom teaching.
Spoon River Blacktop is constantly upgrading materials, trucks, and utilize technologies as needed. Matthew went through the training to become a Level 3 QC/QA (quality control/quality assurance) through the state of Illinois.
